Trump: Houston flood disaster ‘historic, epic, biggest’

US President Donald Trump said there has never been any flood as bad as the one ravaging Texas and its capital of Houston, following unprecedented rainstorm. He declared that the state faces a “long and difficult road” to recovery after the floods. “It’s the biggest ever, they are saying it is the biggest, it’s historic,” Trump said, addressing a White House press conference a day before he travels to the Lone Star State with his wife,  Melania. “There’s probably never been anything like this,” Trump said of Tropical Storm Harvey, which hit the Gulf Coast at the weekend and inundated the Houston region. “I’ve heard the words ‘epic,’ I’ve heard ‘historic.’ That’s what it is,” he added. The US leader earlier indicated his team had already been in contact with Congressional leaders to discuss relief for the millions of people affected by tropical storm Harvey, which is barrelling along the Texan coast toward Louisiana. “We’re dealing with Congress,” Trump said, speaking

Super Tucano fighter jets, bombs for Nigeria: Pentagon

The Pentagon has notified the U.S. Congress  of the sale to Nigeria of 12 Super Tucano A-29 planes and weapons worth $593 million, needed for the  fight against the militant group, Boko Haram. The move on the sale, which included thousands of bombs and rockets and was originally agreed by former President Barack Obama’s administration, was announced by the Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency. The sale was initially announced on 2 August. The Super Tucano A-29, an agile, propeller-driven plane with reconnaissance and surveillance as well as attack capabilities, is made by Brazil’s Embraer. A second production line is in Florida, in a partnership between Embraer and privately held Sierra Nevada Corp of Sparks, Nevada. The Super Tucano costs more than $10 million each and the price can go much higher depending on the configuration. It is powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT 6 engine. The Obama administration delayed the deal after incidents including the Ni

Breaking: Mayweather wins, referee saves McGregor

Floyd Mayweather has won the fight against loudmouth Conor McGregor in the 10th round, with the referee having to save the Irish challenger from further punishment. The American now has a 50-0 record. And for his efforts, he will pocket a potential $300m (£230m). Boxing pundits never expected the fight at T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas, United States, to go the distance, but McGregor lived up to his promise to shock the boxing world. McGregor came out full of fury and menace but Mayweather, long regarded as the finest defensive fighter to step into the ring, left few openings and used the first three rounds to feel out his opponent. But in the end the champion Mayweather was just too good. The end came early in the 10th round as Mayweather  landed a flurry of unreplied punches on an apparently fatigued McGregor. The referee, Robert Byrd stepped in to stop the fight to save McGregor from any more punishment. The fight which was delayed because of pay-per-view issues starte

Tennis: Murray withdraws from the US Open

Tennis world number two, Britain’s  Andy Murray has pulled out of the U.S. Open, citing a hip injury. The tournament begins on Monday in New York. The Scot, who had not played since Wimbledon, said he had tried everything to be fit for the final grand slam of the year. “I tried obviously resting, rehabbing to try and get myself ready here,” an emotional Murray told a news conference at Flushing Meadows on Saturday. “I was actually practicing OK the last few days but it’s too sore for me to win the tournament, and ultimately that’s what I was here to try and do.” The three-times grand slam winner, who won the U.S. Open in 2012, has been struggling with the injury for much of the summer. He was suffering during his French Open semi-final defeat by Stan Wawrinka in June and had to pull out of two exhibition matches in the run-up to Wimbledon. It was clearly a big problem during his home grand slam tournament, when he bowed out, clearly in pain, in the quarter-finals, to S

I have had my last fight: Mayweather

Floyd Mayweather said he is not going to fight again after winning his 50th professional bout against Irishman Conor McGregor in Las Vegas Saturday night. ‘This was my last fight. I chose the right dance partner’, he said after stopping the Irishman in the 10th round. “He is a tough competitor and we gave them what the fans wanted to see – I owed them for the Manny Pacquiao fight. “He [McGregor] was a lot better than I thought. He was a tough competitor, but I was the better man. Our game plan was to take our time, let him shoot his heavy shots and take him out at the end. “In the MMA, he fights 25 minutes really hard, and after 25 minutes he starts to slow down. I guaranteed everybody this would not go the distance. Boxing’s reputation was on the line.” On his record of 50-0, beating Rocky Marciano’s 49-0, Mayweather added: “Rocky Marciano is a legend and I look forward to going into the hall of fame one day. “This was my last fight tonight, for sure. I chose the righ

North Korea fires 3 new missiles

The crisis in the Korean Peninsula is far from being resolved as North Korea on Friday fired “several projectiles” into sea off its eastern coast. According to the South Korean military, the missiles were launched from a site in the North Korean province of Gangwon and flew for about 250km (150 miles). Since firing an intercontinental ballistic weapon last month, Pyongyang has threatened to aim missiles at the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam. But this latest test did not threaten the U.S. or Guam, the U.S. military said. The projectiles were first launched at 06:49 on Saturday (21:49 GMT Friday), South Korea’s Defence Ministry said. The U.S. military said three missiles were fired. “The first and third missiles failed in flight. The second missile launch appears to have blown up almost immediately,” said Commander Dave Benham of the U.S. Pacific Command. The launches were spread over a period of 30 minutes, he added. “The military is keeping a tight surveillance ove

U.S. punishes Venezuela over undemocratic actions

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday imposing new financial sanctions on Venezuela over President Nicolas Maduro’s undemocratic actions amid efforts to consolidate his power. The move prohibits dealings in new debt and equity issued by the Venezuelan government and the state-owned oil company. “These measures are carefully calibrated to deny the Maduro dictatorship a critical source of financing to maintain its illegitimate rule,” the White House said. It added that it would also “protect the U.S. financial system from complicity in Venezuela’s corruption.’’ The move came as Maduro has clamped down on political opposition and consolidated power in his government’s hands. Venezuela’s economy has been in a free fall and its citizens have suffered from food shortages and a sharp rise in violent crime. On Aug. 11, Trump issued a surprise threat to Maduro, warning that the U.S. might intervene in the chaos enveloping the South American country.

ECOWAS: Fears over Morocco’s membership

A retired Nigerian diplomat, Mr Zango Abdu, on Thursday said Morocco’s bid to join the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) may pose serious security threat to the region. He said this in a panel discussion, which examined the security “Implication of the Ascension of Morocco to ECOWAS” at a high-level dialogue on opportunities and threats of the ascension in Abuja. “Nigeria is the biggest military power in West Africa; it has the biggest economy in the region and the panel that discussed security discussed how Boko Haram affected Nigeria, Chad, Cameron and Niger. “One of the issues that came up is to say that Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is gaining stronger ground in Morocco,” Abdu, who chaired the panel, said. He warned that if Nigeria failed to take higher interest in this issue of Morocco joining ECOWAS, it was most likely that the youths joining ISIS in Morocco or Libya would find their ways into the country. This, according to Abdu, is the r

NAF instructor dies in Kaduna plane crash

Air Commodore Olatukumbo Adesanya, Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force (NAF), said that a NAF Beetle Aircraft crashed on Thursday in Kaduna while on a mission. Adesanya announced this in a statement in Kaduna on Thursday. According to him, the only soul on board the aircraft, one of the NAF’s experienced instructor pilots was unfortunately killed in the mishap. He said the cause of the incident was unknown. However, he said the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, had directed the constitution of a board of inquiry to determine the immediate and remote causes of the crash. “The unfortunate incident is a tragic reminder of the hazards associated with the flying profession. “The CAS and the entire NAF family commiserate with the relatives of the late instructor pilot.”
