Jonathan Replies Obasanjo

President Goodluck Jonathan in an interview with with one of the National Newspapers has advised former President Olusegun Obasanjo to be civil in his criticism so as not to create the impression that the country is in crisis. “First and foremost, Obasanjo is a father to me. By divine providence and the Grace of God I am the President of Nigeria today. It is not by my strength. But God uses human beings to actualise His own blessings on human beings. And He used so many Nigerians, including former President Obasanjo to play one role or the other for me. “I became the deputy governor of a state, became the governor, the vice-president and president. I have no issues with him and I really don’t want to join issues with President Obasanjo. I think it is not necessary. But I will use this opportunity, because you asked, to just plead with my father that he is a leader, a former president of the country. He has led the country more than anybody; eight years of democratic governance a

Obasanjo’s Exit is PDP’s Death Warrant, Says Kwankwaso

Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has described the exit of former President Olusegun Obasanjo from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a fatal blow which points to the fact that the death warrant of the party is about to be signed. Kwankwaso described Obasanjo as a personality of great substance whose influence as a politician and elder statesman is too important to be ignored, adding that PDP leaders under rating his exit are only shedding crocodile tears. In an interview with journalists in his office on Monday, Kwankwaso revealed that the five governors who defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) were vindicated for seeing the futility in remaining in the party that had lost credibility and steam. Kwankwaso alleged that the PDP is on road to extinction in the face of the abysmal rot rocking its leadership. He, however, stated that the five governors had proven to everyone that they have political might to decide the fate of the party given

Buhari Dares Jonathan to Publish PWC Forensic Report on NNPC

The All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) has challenged President Goodluck Jonathan to make public the report of the forensic audit on the alleged missing $20 billion said to have been unremitted by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). But despite the challenge and the growing suspicion over the management of the funds of the NNPC, the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke, yesterday, defended the accounting system of the corporation declaring that she is satisfied with the level of transparency of the records in the organization. According to her, it took a lot of determination on her part for the NNPC to even get to this stage and to open itself up to the sort of forensic audit that was conducted as well. She noted that, “All in all, I am on one hand pleased that PriceWaterHouseCoopers, PWC, has finished the in depth audit they did. On the other hand, I am very disappointed. She said her disapp

Fresh bomb attack in Potiskum, many feared dead

A bomb has exploded at a market in Potiskum, Yobe State, with many people feared dead, the News Agency of Nigeria has reported. The blast occurred on Sunday at the GSM market in the city. Some survivors suspected that a female suicide bomber detonated the explosive, killing herself and others at the busy market. Toyin Gbadegesin, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, confirmed the attack to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). “Yes, there was a bomb attack at the Potiskum GSM market and our men have moved to the scene for rescue operation and to get details of the incident,” he said. “As at this moment, we do not have the details of deaths and injuries. Our men are still collating the details.” Other survivors said the bomb exploded after an argument between the suspected bomber and local security men at the market. The blast was the second on the market this year, with the first killing seven people and injuring many others. No group has claimed responsibility for t

Obasanjo shuns PDP, Jonathan reconciliation again

There were indications on Friday that former President Olusegun Obasanjo might have shunned a peace move by the Peoples Democratic Party and President Goodluck Jonathan. Sunday PUNCH reliably gathered that as part of the President’s visit to Ogun State on Friday, Jonathan and the leadership of the PDP had planned to meet with the former President. It was, however, learnt that the former president, who had got wind of the peace move, travelled to Gambia on Thursday. It was not clear whether the ex-President had plans to attend the Gambia event before Jonathan’s visit. Investigations revealed that Obasanjo would have been part of the closed-door meeting Jonathan had with some Ogun State traditional rulers on Friday, but for his absence from the country. An aide of the former president, who pleaded anonymity because Obasanjo did not mandate him to speak on the issue, explained his (Obasanjo’s) main grouse with Jonathan. He said that the major problem the former president ha

Buhari meets former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, in London

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Muhammadu Buhari, on Saturday held a meeting with a former Prime Minister of Britain, Tony Blair, in London. Mr. Buhari met Mr. Blair in company with Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, and a former Governor of Kwara, Bukola Saraki, who tweeted a group photograph of participants at the meeting. “Just finished a meeting with @Govsia @ThisIsBuhari and @tonyblairoffice,” Mr. Saraki, an incumbent senator, wrote. It is not clear what Mr. Buhari discussed with Mr. Blair at the meeting. Mr. Saraki apparently tweeted the picture to challenge tales being spread by supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party that Mr. Buhari is in the United Kingdom for medical reason. Mr. Buhari’s campaign had on Friday announced that Mr. Buhari had departed for the U.K. on a short working visit. The statement said in the course of the visit, Mr. Buhari would hold meetings with key members of the British

2015 PRESIDENCY Jonathan goes for broke: Sets Up Fresh Zonal Committees to Relaunch Campaign. Budgets Multi-Billion Naira ‘Gifts’ for Traditional and Religious Leaders, Groups, Students, Academics

President Goodluck Jonathan and his campaign team has launched a massive campaign drive to woo traditional and religious leaders, political groups, women, students, academic, etc in all the six geopolitical groups to support his second term bid in the March 28 presidential election. The new move, which the president started from the South-West at the weekend, is a device to neutralise the popularity of the All Progressives Congress (APC’s) presidential candidate, retired General Muhammadu Buhari. The six-week window of opportunity created by the insistence of the military to tackle the insurgency in the North-East is being used to drum the president’s achievements into the ears of Nigerians so as to win over their hearts. Sunday Trust learnt at the weekend that as the campaigns across the country had virtually been accomplished before the elections were rescheduled for another six weeks, the campaign organisation decided to set up the new committees. They would be led by high-pow

Ateke Tom defends Jonathan’s wife

BARELY three days after unknown gunmen attacked the campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress in Okrika Local Government Area of Rives State, a former militant leader, Ateke Tom, has dismissed claims that the President’s wife, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, was behind the incident. One policeman was killed while several APC supporters were injured when hoodlums opened fire on the governorship campaign rally in the area. There were reports that Mrs. Jonathan, who is a native of Okrika Local Government Area, had a hand in the incident that led to the attack on a Channels Television correspondent, Mr. Charles Eruka. But Ateke Tom, who rose in the defence of the President’s wife while speaking in a telephone interview with Sunday PUNCH, explained that Mrs. Jonathan would never be involved in the sponsorship of violence. He described her as a woman of peace. He accused politicians of being responsible for the attack on the APC rally. He said, “Politicians are pointing accusing f

UK security services 'failed' over Syria girls:

The family of a Scottish woman suspected of encouraging three London schoolgirls to join militants in Syria says security services "failed". Aqsa Mahmood, 20, who went to Syria to be a "jihadi bride" in 2013, reportedly had online contact with one of the girls who left London last week. It is feared that Kadiza Sultana, 16, and Shamima Begum and Amira Abase, both 15, may try to join Islamic State. Scotland Yard said it would not discuss matters of surveillance and security. In a statement, Ms Mahmood's family said it was "full of horror and anger" that she "may have had a role to play" in recruiting the girls for Islamic State (IS). 'Evil distortion' "However, the security services have serious questions to answer," the family added. "Aqsa's social media has been monitored since she disappeared over a year ago, yet despite alleged contact between the girls and Aqsa, they failed to stop them from leav

Election Related Violence And Death Is Getting Out Of Hand.

What Happened To The Peace Pact? A teenage boy has been killed in a row over a campaign billboard of President Goodluck Jonathan in Zangon Aya, Igabi local government of Kaduna State. Sama’ila Umar was stabbed in the back and later fell down a deep well after a brief argument over the erection of Jonathan’s billboard in the town. Police confirmed the incident and said one Mohammed Suleiman was arrested. A source in Zangon Aya told Weekly Trust yesterday that the incident happened on Thursday at about 7pm. He said “Mohammed Suleiman came with posters of the president and was looking for a spot to erect a giant billboard. The deceased, Umar, told him not to place any poster or erect a campaign billboard in the town because the area was the stronghold of the opposition party and billboard might be damaged.” The source said Suleiman refused to heed the advice and was angered when Umar kept pleading with him over the matter. “He brought out a knife and stabbed Umar and chased h

Stable power not feasible until 2017, says Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan hinted yesterday that the nation’s quest for stable light might not be met by the government until after two or more years . According to him, the interface between the federal government and the private sector on full privatisation of the energy sector to make steady power supply feasible in the country, would hopefully be completed in two years period. The president who dropped the hint while inaugurating the 750 Mega Watts Olorunsogo Power Plant Phase II, Papalanto, Ogun State, said that his administration had spent about US$8. 26 Billion in the bid to boost the national electricity generation capacity by over 4, 700MGW. He said: “to stimulate the micro and medium enterprises, government must invest and must show significant concern for power and that is what we are doing. “And we promised this country that surely in the next two years, the interface between 100 per cent government control of power sector and 100 per cent control of the private

CAN IS NOT FINDING THE ALLEGATION OF 7Billion NAIRA BRIBE FUNNY O!

Pastor-Ayo-OritsejaforThe Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has debunked the allegations that it collected N7 billion bribe to campaign against the All Progressives Congress, APC’s presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd). The christian body while describing it as a ‘fat lie’ wondered why mischief makers would concoct lies to deceive the public. Public Relation Officer, PRO, of Northern CAN, Mr. Sunday Oibe, said: “The allegation is a complete lie and just one of the many evil plots to dent the image of CAN’s leadership. “It is also to rubbish its integrity and make it morally incapable of leading Christians in these trying times. There was no way anybody would collect a kobo on behalf of CAN and start sharing it like booty. “The man, who made the allegation, is totally unknown in CAN cycle and I am just hearing his name and that of his organization for the first time. $20bn missing oil money: Reps ask FG to release audit firm’s full report

The house of Representatives yesterday asked the Federal Government to release the full audit report of Price Waterhouse Coopers on the missing $20 billion in Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, for further investigations. This development was sequel to a motion raised under matters of public importance by the minority leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, APC, Surulere Federal Constituency, Lagos. The minority leader in his submission, said: “The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi had raised an alarm that $20bn oil was missing from our coffers”. Point of order But before Gbajabiamila could continue, Leo Ogor, PDP Isoko Federal Constituency, raised a point of order pointing out that the minority leader erred in requesting the House to suspend the rule of the House, contrary to Section 48. The presiding officer, Aminu Tambuwal, however, declared that Ogor was trying to overrule his earlier decision and ordered him to sit down for Gbajabi

Spokesperson of the APC Senate Caucus, Babafemi Ojudu, who spoke in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja, explained that other senators from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party were also being co-opted into the struggle. He said APC senators had started mobilising themselves to frustrate Obanikoro’s clearance and approval for fresh appointment. He said, “We will do everything possible to stop Obanikoro from being cleared as a minister. Ordinarily, being a former senator he is expected to take a bow and receive automatic clearance but in the present circumstance he has serious issues to clear. “In a normal society, he should have been picked by security agents and quizzed over his involvement in
